Target Information
Adrenergic receptors (ARs) are members of the 7-transmembrane domain G-protein-coupled receptor superfamily that bind endogenous catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Nine receptor subtypes have been identified, including three alpha-1 AR subtypes (1A/D, 1B, and 1C), three alpha-2 ARs (2A, 2B, and 2C), and three beta AR subtypes (1, 2, and 3).
ARs are involved in various physiological and pathological processes such as hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, diabetes, glaucoma, depression, and impotence.
Alpha-1A adrenergic receptor (A1AR) subtypes are expressed in multiple tissues and are associated with regulation of blood pressure, vascular tone, and cardiac output.
A1AR activation also influences uterine contraction, hepatic glucose metabolism, expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), proto-oncogene expression, and mitogenesis.
Additionally, norepinephrine activation of alpha-1 AR in the hypothalamus may increase nitric oxide synthase (NOS) levels, potentially affecting hormone release such as LH, androgens, estrogen, and progesterone.
