Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1 or MTCO1) is one of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded subunits (MTCO1, MTCO2, MTCO3) of respiratory Complex IV. Complex IV, located in the mitochondrial inner membrane, is the final enzyme of the electron transport chain in oxidative phosphorylation.
It consists of 13 polypeptides: subunits I–III are mtDNA-encoded, while subunits IV–VIII are nuclear-encoded. The enzyme complex contains four redox centers—two hemes (a, a3) and two copper centers (CuA, CuB)—with the hemes and CuB bound to subunit I. Studies have shown that mutations in the COX subunit I gene can affect enzyme function and mitochondrial respiration.
