Target Information

Interphotoreceptor retinol-binding protein (IRBP) is a large glycoprotein that binds retinoids and is found primarily in the interphotoreceptor matrix of the retina between the retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells. It plays a critical role in transporting retinoids between these cells, which is essential for the visual process.

The human IRBP (RBP3) gene is approximately 9.5 kbp in length and consists of four exons separated by three introns (1.6–1.9 kbp each). It is transcribed into a 4.3 kb mRNA that encodes a glycosylated protein of about 135 kDa. The amino acid sequence can be divided into four homology domains (33–38% identity), indicating gene duplication events. The first three domains and part of the fourth are encoded by the first exon, while the remainder of the fourth domain is encoded by the last three exons.
