Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase is the last enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, driving oxidative phosphorylation. It catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water and contributes to the creation of an electrochemical gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, essential for ATP synthesis. Subunit 2 contains the dinuclear copper A center (CU(A)) that transfers electrons from cytochrome c to the active site in subunit 1, enabling oxygen reduction.
