Target Information
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is an emerging disease characterized by atypical pneumonia and attributed to a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV). The nucleocapsid protein (N) is one of the structural proteins of SARS-CoV (N, S, sE, M). The SARS-CoV nucleocapsid (N) protein is the most abundant protein in virus-infected cells.
The SARS-CoV-2 S gene shares 76% amino acid similarity with the SARS-CoV S gene. During the SARS-CoV epidemic, nonsynonymous mutations developed in the S protein. Reports show that the crystal structure of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein is similar to previously described coronavirus N proteins, but with distinct surface electrostatic potential characteristics.
