Target Information
CD81 (TAPA-1) is a tetraspanin family protein expressed on most nucleated cells, particularly germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, morphology, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells. In muscle cells, CD81 promotes fusion and myotube maintenance and serves as a receptor for hepatitis C virus. CD81 is associated with tumor-suppressor regions and may be a candidate gene for certain malignancies.
