Target Information
This gene is a paralog of the SMN1 gene, which encodes the survival motor neuron protein. Mutations in SMN1 cause autosomal recessive proximal spinal muscular atrophy. The protein encoded by SMNDC1 is a nuclear protein and a constituent of the spliceosome complex. It is differentially expressed with abundant levels in skeletal muscle and may share similar cellular functions as the SMN1 gene.
