Target Information
Mutations in the Schizosaccharomyces pombe Rae1 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Gle2 genes result in accumulation of poly-containing mRNA in the nucleus, suggesting involvement in RNA export. The human RAE1 protein, homologous to yeast Rae1, contains four WD40 motifs and localizes to distinct foci in the nucleoplasm, nuclear rim, and cytoplasmic meshwork structures. It is involved in nucleocytoplasmic transport and may attach cytoplasmic mRNPs to the cytoskeleton. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found.
