Target Information
ATG14 (Autophagy related protein homolog 14) is encoded by the ATG14 gene located on human chromosome 14. Also known as ATG14L or BARKOR (Beclin 1-associated autophagy-related key regulator), ATG14 plays a key role in autophagy — a conserved process for recycling misfolded proteins and degrading dysfunctional organelles.
Autophagy is induced under nutrient stress, leading to autophagosome formation and fusion with lysosomes. The Class III PI3-Kinase complex, including Vps34 and Beclin 1, interacts with ATG14 (type 1) or UVRAG (type 2). ATG14 directs the type 1 complex to the preautophagosomal structure (PAS), which is critical for autophagosome initiation.
