Target Information
Mammalian serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is a tetrameric, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the reversible interconversion of serine and tetrahydrofolate to glycine and methylenetetrahydrofolate.
SHMT exists in two forms: cytoplasmic (SHMT1) and mitochondrial (SHMT2).
- cSHMT (SHMT1) mainly supports thymidylate biosynthesis.
- SHMT2 functions in mitochondrial one-carbon metabolism.
