Target Information
IL-10 encodes a cytokine primarily produced by monocytes, with some production by lymphocytes. It regulates immune responses and inflammation by down-regulating Th1 cytokines, MHC class II antigens, and costimulatory molecules on macrophages. IL-10 enhances B cell survival, proliferation, and antibody production, blocks NF-kappa B activity, and participates in JAK-STAT signaling regulation. Knockout studies indicate its essential role as an immunoregulator in the intestinal tract. Mutations in IL10 are linked to increased susceptibility to HIV-1 infection and rheumatoid arthritis. Diseases associated with IL10 include Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1.
