Specificity Comments:
Cytokines are small, soluble proteins with pleiotropic effects on various cell types. They regulate immune responses and mediate inflammation through receptor binding and signal transduction.
Interleukin-17 (IL-17) and its receptor IL-17R exemplify this mechanism. IL-17 induces IL-6 and IL-8 secretion and increases ICAM-1 expression in human fibroblast cultures. IL-17 shares strong homology with HSV-13 protein, which mimics its function. The IL-17 receptor is a type I transmembrane protein (864 amino acids) highly expressed in spleen and kidney.

Target Information

Interleukin 25 (IL-25), a member of the IL-17 family, is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by Th17 effector cells. It contributes to autoimmune processes such as Rheumatoid Arthritis by activating NF-kappa-B and stimulating IL-8 production. IL-25 activity is regulated through IL-23, IL-5, and TGF-beta.
