Target Information
Parvalbumin (PV) is a calcium-binding protein expressed in specific muscle fibers and fast-firing neurons. It belongs to the EF-hand protein family and plays a critical role in calcium decay during muscle contraction and relaxation cycles. The rate of muscle relaxation correlates positively with parvalbumin concentration. PV is also expressed in specific GABAergic interneurons that help maintain excitation-inhibition balance in the cortex and hippocampus. In ALS patients, parvalbumin immunoreactivity is absent from neuron populations lost early in the disease.
