Target Information
Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility and maintenance of the cytoskeleton. Three main groups of actin isoforms are identified in vertebrates: alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha actins: Found in muscle tissues and form the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins: Co-exist in most cell types as cytoskeletal components and mediators of internal cell motility.
- Actin gamma 1: A cytoplasmic actin present in all cell types. Mutations are linked to DFNA20/26 (autosomal dominant progressive hearing loss) and Baraitser-Winter syndrome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
