Background

Histamine is a ubiquitous messenger molecule released from mast cells, enterochromaffin-like cells, and neurons. Its actions are mediated by histamine receptors H1, H2, H3, and H4. The protein encoded by HRH1 is an integral membrane protein belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. It mediates smooth muscle contraction, increases capillary permeability, releases catecholamine from the adrenal medulla, and participates in neurotransmission in the central nervous system. HRH1 is linked to processes such as memory, learning, circadian rhythm, and thermoregulation, and contributes to allergic diseases including atopic dermatitis, asthma, anaphylaxis, and allergic rhinitis. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
