Background
Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha subunit (HIF1A) is the alpha component of transcription factor HIF-1, a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta subunits. HIF-1 acts as a master regulator of cellular and systemic homeostatic response to hypoxia by activating transcription of numerous genes involved in energy metabolism, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and oxygen delivery adaptation. It plays a critical role in embryonic vascularization, tumor angiogenesis, and ischemic disease pathophysiology. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene. (RefSeq, Jul 2011)
