Background
This gene encodes a member of the ephrin (EPH) family. The ephrins and EPH-related receptors form the largest subfamily of receptor protein-tyrosine kinases and play essential roles in developmental processes, particularly in the nervous system and erythropoiesis. Ephrins are divided into ephrin-A (EFNA) class, anchored to the membrane via a glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage, and ephrin-B (EFNB) class, which are transmembrane proteins. EFNA4 belongs to the ephrin-A class. Three transcript variants encoding distinct proteins have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
