Background
This gene encodes the D4 subtype of the dopamine receptor, a G-protein coupled receptor that inhibits adenylyl cyclase. It is a target for drugs treating schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. Mutations in this gene have been linked to behavioral phenotypes such as autonomic nervous system dysfunction, ADHD, and novelty-seeking personality traits. The gene contains a polymorphic number (2–10 copies) of tandem 48 nt repeats; the reference sequence includes four repeats. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
