Background
이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 케라틴 유전자군에 속하는 중간필라멘트 단백질로, 상피세포의 구조적 안정성을 유지하는 역할을 합니다. 대부분의 type I cytokeratin은 산성 단백질로 구성되어 있으며, heterotypic keratin chain의 쌍으로 배열되고 염색체 17q12-q21 영역에 클러스터되어 있습니다. Keratin 16은 식도, 혀, 모낭 등 다양한 상피 조직에서 Keratin 14와 함께 발현되며, 이 유전자 변이는 type 1 pachyonychia congenita, non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma, unilateral palmoplantar verrucous nevus와 관련이 있습니다.
