Cellular Localization

Nucleus matrix, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, cell projection (ruffle membrane, lamellipodium membrane, growth cone, axon).
Colocalizes with actin cytoskeleton in membrane ruffles and lamellipodia.
Detected at cleavage furrow and contractile ring during cytokinesis.
Almost completely localized in the nucleus under heat shock or 10% DMSO exposure.

Background

Cofilin 1 (CFL1) is a human protein that can polymerize and depolymerize F-actin and G-actin in a pH-dependent manner.
Phosphorylation by LIM kinase promotes Rho-induced actin cytoskeleton reorganization.
Cofilin is widely distributed intracellularly, binds and depolymerizes filamentous F-actin, and inhibits monomeric G-actin polymerization.
It also participates in translocation of the actin–cofilin complex from cytoplasm to nucleus.
