Target Information
This gene encodes a single-pass membrane protein that belongs to the N-acyltransferase (NAT) superfamily and contains a conserved GCN5/NAT domain. It is a neuron-specific enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) from L-aspartate and acetyl-CoA. NAA acts as a storage and transport form of acetyl coenzyme A in the nervous system. Mutations in this gene are associated with primary NAA deficiency (hypoacetylaspartia).
