Target Information

The S1 region attaches the virion to the cell membrane by interacting with host ANPEP (aminopeptidase N), initiating infection. Binding to the receptor induces conformational changes in the S glycoprotein, exposing the fusion peptide of the S2 region and activating membrane fusion.
The S2 region belongs to the class I viral fusion proteins and has at least three conformational states: pre-fusion native, pre-hairpin intermediate, and post-fusion hairpin.
During viral and host membrane fusion, the coiled-coil (heptad repeat) regions form a trimer-of-hairpins structure, positioning the fusion peptide near the C-terminal ectodomain region. This structural rearrangement drives membrane apposition and fusion. [Uniprot]
