Target Information
Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are key components of potassium currents in the heart and central nervous system. In the heart, Kv4 channels are involved in the repolarization phase of the action potential, while in the brain they prevent reverse-propagation of action potentials.
KChIPs (Kv channel interacting proteins) are calcium-binding proteins associated with Kv4 channels. These small molecular weight proteins bind to the cytoplasmic amino termini of Kv4 alpha-subunits and modulate their function.
There are three known KChIPs:
- KChIP1: expressed in the brain
- KChIP2: expressed in brain, heart, and lung; has three isoforms (a, b, c)
- KChIP3: also known as calsenilin and DREAM (DRE-antagonist modulator), expressed in brain and testis
