Target Information

Potassium channels are present in most mammalian cells and are involved in a wide range of physiological responses.
The KCNJ1 gene encodes an integral membrane inward-rectifier potassium channel activated by internal ATP, playing a key role in potassium homeostasis.
This protein favors potassium influx over efflux.
Mutations in KCNJ1 are associated with antenatal Bartter syndrome, characterized by salt wasting, hypokalemic alkalosis, hypercalciuria, and low blood pressure.
Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
