Target Information
Kcnb2 (Kv2.2) encodes a voltage-gated K⁺ channel that is a key determinant of neuronal membrane excitability.
Differences in K⁺ channel expression and density contribute to variations in action potential waveforms and repetitive firing patterns among neuronal cell types.
Delayed rectifier-type (IK) channels (Kv1.5, Kv2.1, Kv2.2) are expressed in neuronal somata, proximal dendrites, and various non-neuronal cells including pancreatic islets, alveolar cells, and cardiac myocytes.
Kv2.1 and Kcnb2 form distinct K⁺ channel populations, primarily responsible for IK in superior cervical ganglion cells. Functionally, Kcnb2 mediates voltage-dependent potassium ion permeability of excitable membranes, opening or closing in response to membrane potential differences.
Diseases associated with KCNB2 include Brugada Syndrome.
