AMPK의 비활성형 홀로엔자임은 두 개의 조절 서브유닛과 두 개의 촉매 서브유닛으로 구성된 테트라머입니다. cAMP는 네 개의 cAMP가 결합된 두 조절 서브유닛과 두 개의 자유 촉매 서브유닛으로 분리되도록 유도합니다. 인간에서는 네 종류의 조절 서브유닛과 세 종류의 촉매 서브유닛이 확인되었습니다. 이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 조절 서브유닛 중 하나로, 활성화된 촉매 서브유닛에 의해 인산화될 수 있으며 다양한 A-kinase anchoring proteins과 상호작용하여 AMPK의 세포 내 위치를 결정할 수 있습니다.
