Target Information
Carbonic anhydrases are zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They are involved in biological processes such as respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and secretion of various fluids (aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, gastric acid).
This gene encodes a glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol-anchored membrane isozyme found on the luminal surfaces of pulmonary capillaries and proximal renal tubules. Although its exact function is not fully understood, it may play a role in inherited renal bicarbonate transport abnormalities.
