Target Information
Members of the trefoil family are characterized by having at least one copy of the trefoil motif, a 40-amino acid domain containing three conserved disulfides. They are stable secretory proteins expressed in gastrointestinal mucosa. Their functions are not fully defined but may include protection of the mucosa from insults, stabilization of the mucus layer, and aiding epithelial healing.
This gene, expressed in the gastric mucosa, has also been studied for its role in human tumors. It is part of a gene cluster on chromosome 21 along with two other related trefoil family members.
