Target Information
The inhibin alpha subunit joins either the beta A or beta B subunit to form a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin negatively regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation and has tumor-suppressor activity. Serum levels of inhibin reflect the size of granulosa-cell tumors and can be used as a marker for primary and recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, expression of the inhibin alpha-subunit gene is suppressed and undetectable in poorly differentiated tumor cells. Expression varies among gonadal and extragonadal tissues, suggesting that inhibin functions as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
