Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). LF is found in milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules. It plays roles in iron homeostasis, host defense against microbial infection, anti-inflammatory activity, cellular growth regulation, and cancer protection.
Lactoferrin acts as a first line of defense by binding and removing Fe³⁺ from the environment and also exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities.
Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, and receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
