Target Information
WW domain-containing proteins are present in all eukaryotes and play important roles in regulating cellular processes such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing.
The WWOX gene encodes a protein with two WW domains and a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SRD) domain. It is highly expressed in hormonally regulated tissues (testis, ovary, prostate), suggesting a role in steroid metabolism.
The protein shares over 90% identity with the mouse homolog, which mediates TNF-α-induced apoptosis, implying a similar role in human apoptosis. WWOX also acts as a tumor suppressor, and alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
