Target Information

Azurocidin, also called heparin-binding protein (HBP), is an inactive homolog of serine proteinases residing in granulocytes. Initially, it was thought to have activity only against gram-negative bacteria, but later it was also found to act against gram-positive bacteria and C. albicans.
Azurocidin is a member of the antimicrobial protein family derived from polymorphonuclear leukocytes, including defensins, LL-37, and lysozyme. It plays a role in immune system activation and modulation, acting as an alarm signal. The cationic domain of the protein is essential for its antimicrobial activity.
Stored in azurophil and secretory granules, azurocidin is released early during extravasation. It is involved in chemotaxis and activation of monocytes, cytokine release, and phagocytosis, aiding efficient bacterial clearance. Its primary targets are endothelial cells and the extravascular environment. Interaction with leukocytes occurs via beta 2-integrins. Elevated plasma levels of azurocidin may help identify patients at risk of developing sepsis.
