Target Information
Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the CNS. It acts as a Ca²⁺ sensor regulating exocytosis and neurotransmitter release.
Studies indicate that Ca²⁺-mediated binding of Synaptotagmin 1 to SNAP25 is essential for membrane fusion. Specific residues within the C2B domain regulate endocytic rate and vesicle size.
Synaptotagmin 1 also binds acidic phospholipids requiring both an acidic head group and diacyl backbone. It interacts Ca²⁺-dependently with receptors for activated protein kinase C and Ca²⁺-independently with neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2.
Dysfunction of Synaptotagmin 1 is associated with food-borne and infant botulism.
