Target Information
BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein that maintains genomic stability and functions as a tumor suppressor. It forms part of the BASC complex (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex) and interacts with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complexes. BRCA1 is involved in transcription, DNA repair, and recombination. Mutations in BRCA1 account for approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its localization and function, with several disease-associated variants described.
