Target Information

BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein involved in maintaining genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms a large multi-subunit protein complex known as BASC (BRCA1 associated genome surveillance complex) with other tumor suppressors, DNA damage sensors, and signal transducers. BRCA1 associates with RNA polymerase II and interacts with histone deacetylase complex through its C-terminal domain, playing roles in transcription, DNA repair, and recombination.
Mutations in BRCA1 are responsible for approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its localization and function, with multiple transcript variants and a related pseudogene located on chromosome 17.
