Target Information
BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein that plays a role in maintaining genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms part of the BASC (BRCA1 associated genome surveillance complex) and interacts with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complex.
BRCA1 is involved in transcription regulation, DNA double-strand break repair, and recombination. Mutations in BRCA1 account for approximately 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers.
Alternative splicing affects its localization and function; several transcript variants have been identified, including disease-associated mutations. A related pseudogene is located on chromosome 17.
