Target Information
FOXL2 is a winged helix/forkhead transcription factor highly conserved among human, goat, mouse, and certain aquatic species. It plays a critical evolutionary role, particularly in ovarian differentiation and follicle development or maintenance.
Immunohistochemical data indicate FOXL2 is a nuclear protein expressed in eyelids and ovarian follicular cells in both fetal and adult tissues. It is associated with blepharophimosis/ptosis/epicanthus inverses syndrome (BPES), which has two forms:
- Type I BPES: Eyelid abnormalities with ovarian failure
- Type II BPES: Eyelid defects only
FOXL2 expression has been observed in developing mouse eyelid mesenchyme and adult ovarian follicles.
