Target Information

The PEX19 gene is essential for early peroxisomal biogenesis. It functions as both a cytosolic chaperone and an import receptor for peroxisomal membrane proteins (PMPs). Peroxins (PEXs) are critical for the assembly of functional peroxisomes.
Peroxisome biogenesis disorders (PBDs) are genetically heterogeneous, autosomal recessive diseases characterized by multiple defects in peroxisome function. These disorders include at least 14 complementation groups, with variable phenotypes observed within groups.
Cells from PBD patients exhibit defects in importing one or more classes of peroxisomal matrix proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with Zellweger syndrome (ZWS).
