Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30,000 people per year in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in specimens obtained from patients in Mexico and the United States. The virus spread rapidly worldwide, leading the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic on June 11, 2009.

Influenza A virus has sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) surface proteins and nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA facilitates viral attachment, while NA is involved in viral release. These proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication.

The genetic composition of the 2009 swine-origin H1N1 strain combines a triple assortment of human, swine, and avian influenza viruses first identified in 1998, with two new pig H3N2 virus genes from Eurasia. The distinct antigenic properties of this virus compared with seasonal influenza A (H1N1) suggest limited human immunity, although some protection may exist in older age groups.
