Target Information
SOX9 plays a key role in sex determination and differentiation of Sertoli cells. It is involved in chondrogenesis and regulates the expression of other genes related to cartilage formation by acting as a transcription factor. Translocation of this gene can lead to campomelic dysplasia. SOX9 contributes to the formation of testes from the indifferent fetal gonads and participates in neuron-glia transition during spinal cord development. In prostate development, SOX9 supports epithelial growth and maintenance, while in prostate cancer, it promotes tumor growth and invasion. It is also implicated in neural crest precursor formation and melanin production. Expression has been detected in adult testis, adult heart, and fetal brain.
