Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene acts as a signal transducer shared by multiple cytokines, including interleukin 6 (IL6), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), and oncostatin M (OSM). It functions as part of the cytokine receptor complex, with activation dependent upon cytokine binding to their receptors. The viral IL6 (vIL6) protein from Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus can directly activate this protein, bypassing the IL6 receptor (IL6R). Knockout studies in mice indicate a critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described.
