Target Information

Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, particularly in large axons.
They are composed of three major subunits — NF-M (medium), NF-H (high), and NF-L (light) — which share a coiled-coil core domain but differ in the length and sequence of their termini.
The NF-M protein tail domain mediates neurofilament interactions critical for axonal size and cytoskeletal architecture.
Phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation of NF-M regulate its translocation, filament formation, and function.
Antibodies against neurofilament subunits serve as valuable neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
