Target Information
Alpha-internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed very early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from the neurofilament triplet proteins (NF-L, NF-M, NF-H), sharing similar protein motifs and intron organization. Many mature neurons contain α-internexin alongside these proteins, while some express only α-internexin.
Antibodies to internexin are valuable tools for studying and classifying neuronal types and tracing neuronal processes in tissue sections or cultures. Its early developmental expression makes α-internexin a convenient marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to the neuronal lineage. Potential applications in brain tumor research remain to be explored.
