Target Information
FOXC1 belongs to the forkhead family of transcription factors characterized by a distinct DNA-binding forkhead domain. Although its specific function is not fully known, it regulates the FGF19-FGFR4-MAPK pathway to promote development and maintenance of anterior segment structures within the eye.
Mutations in this gene are associated with various ocular disorders, including:
- Glaucoma
- Iridogoniodysgenesis anomaly
- Peters anomaly (central corneal leukoma, absence of posterior corneal stroma and Descemet membrane)
- Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly (posterior corneal embryotoxon, iris adhesion to Schwalbe line, hypertelorism, malar bone hypoplasia, congenital absence of teeth, and mental retardation)
