Target Information
The genus Salmonella belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae and consists of Gram-negative, facultative, motile bacilli. Salmonellae possess three major antigens:
- H (flagellar antigen) – phase 1 & 2
- O (somatic antigen) – part of the LPS moiety
- Vi (capsular antigen) – referred to as K in other Enterobacteriaceae
They also contain an LPS endotoxin typical of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of an O polysaccharide (O antigen), an R core, and the inner Lipid A. Endotoxins can induce fever and activate complement, kinin, and clotting factors.
Salmonella Typhimurium is a common cause of food poisoning, leading to diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and nausea, typically lasting up to 7 days. In humans, it causes a less severe disease than S. Typhi and is rarely fatal.
