Target Information
The Factor VIII (F8) gene encodes a coagulation factor that plays a key role in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. Factor VIII acts as a cofactor for factor IXa, which, in the presence of calcium ions and phospholipids, converts factor X to its active form Xa.
This gene produces two alternatively spliced transcripts:
- Transcript variant 1 encodes a large glycoprotein (isoform a) that circulates in plasma and forms a noncovalent complex with von Willebrand factor.
- Transcript variant 2 encodes a smaller isoform (isoform b), primarily consisting of the phospholipid-binding domain essential for coagulant activity.
Defects in this gene cause Hemophilia A, a common recessive X-linked coagulation disorder.
