Target Information
Adiponectin is a protein hormone secreted exclusively by adipocytes that regulates the metabolism of lipids and glucose. It plays a key role in physiological processes such as energy homeostasis and obesity. Decreased adiponectin levels are associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia (type 2 diabetes). In mice, adiponectin improves insulin signaling and reduces insulin resistance. Through activation of AMP kinase and PPAR-alpha, it enhances fatty acid transport, oxidation, and dissipation in skeletal muscle, leading to lower intramyocellular lipid levels and improved insulin sensitivity.
