Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and contribute to protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein and is located adjacent to the gene for BAF complex 53 kDa subunit protein a (BAF53a) in a tail-to-tail orientation. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
