DAZL 단백질은 인간 생식세포의 유사분열 및 감수분열에 관여하며, RNA 결합 단백질로서 태아 및 성체의 생식세포에서 발현됩니다. 인간에서는 원시 생식세포, 성인 고환 및 난소에서 발현되며, 정자형성 과정에서 핵심적인 역할을 합니다.
DAZL 유전자의 결함은 심한 희소정자증 및 비폐쇄성 무정자증으로 인한 불임을 유발할 수 있습니다. DAZ 유전자군은 진화 과정에서 Y 염색체 상의 DAZ 유전자 클러스터로 확장되었습니다.
