Target Information
Calpains are a conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases composed of a small invariant subunit and variable large subunits. The large subunit contains a cysteine protease domain, while both subunits have calcium-binding domains. Calpains are involved in neurodegenerative processes, activated by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
The CAPN9 gene is primarily expressed in the stomach and small intestine, possibly with specialized digestive functions, and has been associated with gastric cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
